Class Highlights

Aha! Moments

1) My first Aha! moment was when I got to meet a lot of classmates as well as Professor Grobman. I was glad that my classmates were nice as well as Professor Grobman being very nice, and helpful as well.

2) My second Aha! moment was when she was passing around old yearbooks. I was part of the yearbook staff during my highschool years and have a passion at looking at vintage yearbooks. It was fun to look at all the old pictures and to see how highschool was like 20 years ago.

3) My third moment was when we worked in the studio as a TV networking staff. To my surprise, It was a lot of hard work. However, the hard work payed off and we filmed a brilliant TV show! I'm glad that I go to take this Mass&Media class. I got to learn so much about the media in just one quarter.

Media Ethics/Media Law

Media Case: Copyright

Veoh & Youtube web site that has entertainment shows featured on their website = illegal under law.

A federal district court says Veoh, a Web video site that has come under legal fire from entertainment companies the past several years, is not liable for the copyright violations committed by its users, a decision that could help YouTube defend itself against Viacom's $1 billion copyright suit.

Universal Music Group, the largest of the four top record companies, accused Veoh of copyright violations in a lawsuit filed two years ago. But on Friday, U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz granted Veoh's motion for summary judgment, and ruled that the company is protected against such claims by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Proposing a PR campaign to wear seat belts

Advertisement to wearing seat belts:
The PR campaign that I will be proposing will be for people of all ages to wear seat belts. Even though the "click it or tick it" campaign has been happening for awhile, people in the world have been forgetting to constantly put their seat belts on. A way for this to stop happening is to develop a PR campaign to create an advertising. My advertisement will showcase two techniques: Direct order and Appeal to fear. The technique for 'direct order' for wearing seat belts would be to simply make images and words that if you don't wear a seat belt you can die from a car accident. The 'appeal to fear' technique will have pictures of a damaged car in my seat belt campaign to warn people that if you don't wear a seat belt this is what can happen. In the end, I want my advertisement seat belt campaign to target readers fast and to see the fear that they can be having if they don't wear their seat belt.

Electronic News

Channel 7 news

Topic covering: "Child's body found in waters off Berkeley Marina; may be Jason Williams"

As I sat down and watched ABC 7 news, the anchors opened up with a loud - stern voice. The achors mannerism were very strong and with confidence. After the infromation was brought out to the network, they went to television and showed 8 consecutive commercials based on advertisements. There was no "happy talk" as this story was a breaking news coverage. This story was chosen because supposedly this child that was found in the waters could be Jason Williams, who has been missing for awhile. Their mannerisms are polite and up front while their facial expressions remain stern.

Internet

On wikipedia.org under the list of 166 searches for "social working websites", the major list that I can relate to are:

Adult FriendFinder
Classmates.com
DeviantArt
Facebook
Flickr
Flixster
Gaia Online
Imeem
Last.fm
LiveJournal
Multiply
Myspace
Tumblr
Twitter
Xanga
Yelp, Inc

Out of the list, i'm surprised that Blogspot.com or lookbook.nu isn't on there. Those two websites are very sociable websites in which can connect readers together. I have never heard of classmates.com; I believe it's a wonderful networking website in which people can connect to former classmates. In terms of social networking websites that helped me out would be: Facebook. Facebook helped me out socially on finding old friends, and new friends connect through the global networking system. It eternally helped me keep in touch with a lot of people that I never thought would. I'm very glad that we have a social networking website which allows you to connect to your friends from a click of a button.

television

Length: 1:57
Description: Local Music stores are finding it increasingly difficult to remain afloat due to the internet and illegal downloading. This youtube documentary covers a student's story about local music stores within walking distance to Penn State's largest campus.
Chapter 7: Recordings and the Music Industry: Copyright, Battles, Format Wars
Question: What are the differences of downloading/buying an album for customers?
Answer: While some fans love and appreciate their favorite artists, they will support them unconditionally and buy their albums. People that do buy albums tend to appreciate holding the actual album in their hands and not just a file on their computer. However, some people who are on the cheaper side like to just download illegally even if they know it's illegal or not.

The movie, 500 days of Summer directed by Marc Webb was my favorite movie of 2009. I saw this movie in the theaters on opening night, and it was quite possibly a great film. The concept of the story was differnt from many other movies that I have seen. This movie also got great ratings from critics, as well my friends that have seen this movie. I recommend anyone to watch 500 days of Summer!

Magazine Proposal

To: Publisher

I'm here to write you a letter on regards for a proposal for a magazine that i'm creating. The magazine title is called: ICF (International Food Specialties). ICF will feature many type of international food hailing from from many countires like: Japan, Korea, Europe, India etc. The concept will be differnt among other food magazines because it features a diversity among Asia countries, and European countries. Readers will be targed among the age group for ALL, male and females will both be interested in my magazine, and espcially for those that are passionate for food! I would want many advertisers to reach my readers. I would want billboards, tv, radio, magazines, and newspapers to reach my readers from their advertisers. The articles that will be appearing in my premier issue will have:
1) An artist from Tokyo expalining the beauty and art of sashimi
2) An article based on international food from Asia vs. American food
3) The history of food (international food)
4) What's popular to eat among European food?
5) Popular international resturaunts that are located around the United States

My premier issue will be colorful, but also settle. I will want the title to be large, with many a picture of flags hailing from differnt countries. I will want to attract readers from all countries and believe that if they see their flag on a magazine - then they will be attracted to it and will buy it.

Influential Books

http://blondierocket.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/kite-runner-book-jacket.jpg
1) "The Kite Runner" By Khaled Hosseni was a highly compelling, yet influential book that I have read. The book had engaged my awareness through the war in Afghanistan. I am ashamed to admit it, but right after finishing this book I went to the computer and Googled "current situation in Afghanistan." Sadly, I found the situation there to be nearly just as volatile and dangerous as when the book ended around 2002. This book had made me feel guilty for complaining about little things throughout my daily life. It showed me an appreciation of the opportunity for living in the the United States.

2) The Pact which is a bibliography based on the story on Drs. Sampson Davis, George, Jenkis, and Rameck Hunt lives. This book was highly influential because it's based on the lives of three young boys who all become doctors. Through the struggles, and hardships they had to overcome made the book extremely inspirational. Their journey was inspirational, which made me become a hard worker. This book made me feel that I have wings, and can soar high with success.

3) "Kitchen" By Banana Yoshimoto was a highly influential book to me. The story is based on a girl named Mikage Sakurai whose Grandmother (which is her only guardian whom is alive) dies. The story soon shifts to her moving in with her classmate's family. The book was influential to me because it was about a girl who didn't know what her identity was, while at the the end of the book, she finds her identity through the love of her new family. "Kitchen" By Yoshimoto had made me realize that even if your life is under the storm, there is still a possibility of hope.

Media Project

Young teenagers around the world are being influenced by violent video games. However, the question is - how many teenagers spend their time on these crucial video games? It's time to take initiative and gather information based on the relationship between kids and video games. My media research project would be regarding on how many teenagers within the age limit of (12-15) that play violent video games. The research will conduct a variety of questions based on their time with video games. My hypothesis would be, when young teenagers play violent video games it will not only influence them but will change their perspective through the right and wrong rules in our society. The survey would be substantial evidence in order for me to determine the percentage on how many teenagers are heavily influenced by violent video games. In order for me to begin my research, I would create an organization to help distribute my surveys. A variety of questions would be: "How many hours a day do you play video games?", "How many video games do you play in which includes gangs, robbery, or violence?". "Do you find playing these characters in which create hostel acts enjoyable?", "How do video games influence your life?" etc. Within this survey, parents can be aware and informed among the influence in which violent video games may have on their children.

Media: Magazines

Magazines influence people around the world as it's their to be read, kept, and saved. In my earlier teenage years, I grew up reading many magazines such as: Seventeen and Cosmogirl. As I have matured through my teenage years my taste for magazines altered. My passion for fashion was born with a flip of the first page of Harper's Bazaar fashion magazine. Reading magazines have always brought my mind to another level among creativity and inspiration. However, my experience with magazines have been a love and hate relationship. Through the years of buying countless magazines made me turn into a severe shopaholic. Every new issue of high end fashion magazines displayed designer bags that would cost more than a college tuition. My shopping wish list became a superficial one as I wanted a designer bag solely because the pages of these fashion magazines were featuring one. The love in fashion that I once had before became a disaster, as I only wanted to spend my money on clothes that would cost a fortune. As years passed by, I became more conscious of my spending and started buying magazines such as: Nylon and Tokion to embrace not only fashion - but music, culture and art as well. Today, I read magazines for my leisure as it's also an inspiration for my career. The pages that are published in the magazines that I read not only inspire me but other women around the world. As magazines influence my life, It's my dream to be a publisher for one. My major is communications with an emphasis on advertisement. The university that I desire to transfer to are: UCLA, NYU, and San Diego state. All three universities offer my major, thus getting accepted to at least one would help me gain the best knowledge for my years to come.
